Difference in height uphill:
932 m
Characteristics
A quite demanding hike, with a steep climb to the S. Anton Pass and a height difference of 932 m.This alpine excursion may be faced only with right hiking equipment as well as suitable ankle boots; do not forget to have a look at the weather forecast before starting, too.
The excursion starts with an easy walkway, then it becomes more and more steep by the wonderful meadows at the end of the La Valle-valley. As the wood becomes sparse, the mountain pines take you to the Fanes Valley, where another steep but well-built climb brings to the S. Anton Pass, at 2468 m above sea level.
If you have some energy left, the track ends at the peak of S. Anton, which is 2656 m high and from where you may enjoy a breathtaking sight on the mountains of the Park of Fanes. The descent to Fanes is easy and goes straight along the Plan de Sarënes down to the Pic Fanes (small Fanes).
At that point there is the possibility to have a rest and a snack at the mountain huts Lavarella and Fanes. Between these two huts, a tiny but fantastic lake, the Green Lake, where the legendary „Marmot Parliament“ and the Muntijela de Fanes are reflected, give you an unforgettable moment.
Then you will go back on the same track. Who does not want more hiking, may go straight down to Pederü, where busses take you to the village.
Best period: after the thaw (beginning/mid June) until September.
The hike
At Spëscia, from the parking place at the old sawmill (1536 m), take the track nr. 13, which reaches Fanes passing through the S. Anton Pass. To reach the S. Anton Peak (another 188 m of height difference), just follow on the left. The track to return passes on the Plan de Sarënes arriving at the Pic Fanes.
The same track done to go up leads back to the starting point. Who wants to shorten the hike may follow the track nr. 7 to Pederü and take a bus to the village (inquire about timetable).
